Gary Castle has been a professional photographer and artist since 1968. Graduating with a diploma in Photographic Theory in 1967, he began his career at Dalhousie University as a bio-medical photographer in the Biology/Oceanography Department, the School of Dentistry and Life Sciences AV Center.
Gary has had numerous solo shows of his photographic images, and his photos have been published extensively in journals and books. His painting and photo collage works have been included in many group exhibits. His works can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the Art Bank of Nova Scotia and the Public Archives of Nova Scotia, as well as in private collections.
Although I have been a professional photographer for all of my working career, my artistic work has largely focused on collage and assemblage pieces using my photos, paint and found objects.
My constructed pieces lean towards making a statement about politics, human foibles and everyday life. These statements are usually not obvious at first, but when the viewer gets it, I hope to create a “wow” moment.
My work has been described as “outsider art” mainly because of the materials I use. That being said, I feel an obligation to lend discarded objects a new lease on life.
