Chan, Ku Sem

Nature plays a significant role in my work. My fondness of gardening inspires my studio practice. I think of an ecosystem when I work and try to figure out the internal logic of my paintings; it is like maintaining a terrarium. Daoism and Zen Buddhism also play a role in my work. I am particularly intrigued by nature, how everything has its own way and flows naturally. My works are in mixed media to explore materiality, and in my abstract paintings particularly, I aim to strike a balance where my touches do not overshadow the material itself.
