Collection: Collier, Louise

Louise Collier is an award-winning artist with work in national and international private collections, as well as in the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador's collection. Her artwork spans many different mediums. Louise is currently focusing most of her attention on the intricate medium of scratchboard. Her work has been featured in East Coast Living Magazine and in an English textbook used in Newfoundland and Labrador schools. She has participated in some of the juried exhibitions of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists, of which she is an active member. Her work has been featured in a number of international juried exhibitions and is exhibited in galleries in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Louise grew up in Toronto, Ontario but has called Mount Pearl, Newfoundland home for more than two decades. She graduated from the University of Guelph and Memorial University of Newfoundland with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art and a Bachelor of Education, respectively. Louise also holds a diploma in Graphic Design and has completed numerous art courses and workshops locally and internationally.

Devoting time to artwork was tricky while raising her family and teaching art at several different schools in and around the St. John's area. Now that her three children have grown into adults, she has more time to focus on being her own artist and creating works that inspire and enchant the viewer.

Artist Statement

For the past five years, I have been working primarily in scratchboard. I like the fact that you can create dramatic images in black and white or with a controlled amount of colour. I like to be able to make the viewer see things in a unique way. Scratchboard lends itself beautifully to high levels of detail. However, you can leave large area of black or remove it completely for dramatic effect.

I choose subjects that touch me in different and unique ways. It could be the way the light hits, or the colour of an animal and the way its fur or feathers grow. I love to think of titles that will make people smile.

My art is often influenced by the environment. I have found that travel and being exposed to new places and things are very inspiring. I often see and remember things that I will use in later pieces, sometimes combining things in one piece to convey the images in my memories.
