Morrison, Carol

Carol Morrison immigrated to Halifax from England to work as a research scientist. After her Laboratory closed in 1997, she obtained a grant to take her life-long passion for painting to a more professional level, completing her BFA degree in 2005.

Carol has had many solo and group shows across Canada. Portraits by her can be found in the IWK and Queen Elizabeth II Health Centres, and her work is in numerous private collections in Canada and abroad. The Nova Scotia Art Bank has four of her paintings.

In 2005 Carol received the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation award, and in 2008 she received a provincial Creation Grant for “Portraits of Injustice”, which was shown first at Pier 21 in 2010 and then around the Maritimes.

Artist Statement

My interest in investigating the natural world around me, which led me to a career as a biologist, also led to paintings of landscape, still life and portraits.

I am most influenced by the vibrant colors and expressive yet delicate brushwork of Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven, and use similar techniques to express my fascination with painting the changing seasons in Nova Scotia. I enjoy plein-air painting, surrounded by nature, but also paint larger scenes using these small works and photographs for reference. My graduation show at NSCAD was of full-length portraits.
