Artist Spotlight: Tara Riddell

Artist Spotlight: Tara Riddell

Artist: Tara Riddell

Tara Riddell is a self-taught artist based in Nova Scotia, inspired by a lifelong fascination with animals, plants, and the intricate worlds they inhabit. Her work reflects this connection to nature, drawing from both the beauty and curiosity found in everyday encounters. When she is not in the studio, she can be found in the company of her animals, tending to her garden, or listening to the conversations of birds. Read more about Tara on her profile.

We asked the artist:

What is your biggest indulgence as an artist?

Oil paint and solid wood panels. So smooth.

What is important to you as an artist?

Nature. Animals. Real life.

What challenges you the most in your practice?

Time. I’m not retired and I work. There’s never enough time.

What themes or symbols are important to you as an artist?

Nature. Always and forever. I particularly lean to cats and birds. Votes and ravens, in particular.

If you were to hang one work of art by another artist in your home, which would you choose?

Whatever artist, I would place it in the small area above the chair I sit in most often.
