About Mary Yurchesyn

“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”
It’s Mary Yurchesyn’s favourite quote and it reflects perfectly how the Sydney, Nova Scotia artist has approached her life.
After nearly 40 years as a dentist with her own practice and with children now grown, Mary is finally able to concentrate fully on her watercolour practice. “I retired four years ago, and I hope to grow as an artist as I begin this new chapter in my life’s journey and hopefully inspire others to try this beautiful medium,”
A native of Cape Breton, Mary grew up on a farm near Sydney taking up drawing and painting at a young age. After achieving a Doctor of Dentistry at Dalhousie University in Halifax, she set out to build a thriving practice in her hometown and raise a family. Even then, she would find time to develop her painting skills by reading books, attending workshops, watching videos and travelling to art expos. Oil was her preferred medium for more than 30 years before she, “fell in love with watercolours. Their luminosity and dynamic nature make them an exciting medium to explore.”
“Pysanky Nestled In Tradition” is Mary’s contribution to the Open Water 100 exhibition. “As artists, we are constantly striving to learn, improve, and move the viewer in some way,” says Mary. “Of course, acknowledgement from fellow artists represents a wonderful compliment and that's why Open Water represents an important opportunity to have your work evaluated by a jury.”
This year represents a milestone for the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, explains Mary, an elected member of CSPWC. “This offers a rare opportunity for Maritime artists because it is Halifax. So, I wanted to paint a subject dear to my heart for submission. With my piece I wanted to embrace my Ukrainian roots and share the beauty of Ukraine at a time when they are struggling to maintain their liberty as a nation.”
Mary continues, “For me, art is like meditation and while I am painting the world just falls away. I am so grateful for the chance to exhibit this year.”
