Experience a unique watercolour exhibition at Teichert Gallery Sep 11 to Oct 2
The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour is formed
In November 1925, 12 Canadian artists passionately committed to the importance of watercolour as a medium met at the Arts and Letters Club in Toronto, determined to identify how to recognize, encourage, and nurture excellence of watercolour works. The Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (CSPWC) was formed and an annual exhibition was organized, highlighting the work of watercolour artists.
Over the next 20+ years, the exhibition was featured in major Canadian art galleries, but by the 1950s as public galleries shifted their exhibition focus, the CSPWC moved its annual show to smaller communities and galleries across the country, spanning from Kamloops to St. John's. For CSPWC’s 50th anniversary, the Art Gallery of Ontario curated a show of watercolours, some of which toured to Canada House in England. In 1985, 60 paintings by CSPWC members were added to the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle.
Today, CSPWC boasts more than 500 elected members and associates, and is organizing its 100th annual Open Water exhibition in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where 40+ juried works will be on view at Teichert Gallery from September 11 to October 2. "We’re excited to celebrate this milestone event in a Maritime province,” says CSPWC regional director Gary McFarlane, who is Co-Chair of this year's exhibition along with CSPWC member Poppy Balser.
