About Jamie Marryatt: My work at the core of its practice lies in a deep connection to landscapes as well as the human form under scrutiny and observation.
I get inspiration from creating repetitions of certain subjects over and over again. I also experiment with painting from photographs, either found imagery or photos I have taken myself. Filtering images through my own experience which combine with everything else happening to me in my life at that particular moment to create a vague narrative of allegorical symbolism that delves into the relationships between humans and animals. To achieve a unification of such imagery, I often use universal or culturally specific symbols that invite subjective interpretation.
My studio practice reflects my use of a wide range of mediums including, oil paints, watercolors, acrylics and charcoal, each chosen for the properties of the medium and the challenge they represent. I paint primarily from memory, imagination, and photographs, I also embrace plein air painting and the energy of graffiti in my practice and infuse it into my work.
I have a fascination with oil paint primarily that stems from a perceived mystique and the technical challenges it poses, Yet I approach it with a sense of playfulness and experimentation. I draw inspiration from all the different contemporary and past artists that I admire and look at as well as the natural world around me. Portrait practice, Landscape painting, and experimentation with composition and color and constant which drive my artistic journey.
I currently work in Halifax/kjipuktuk in and around the HRM area, I graduated NSCAD (Nova Scotia College of Art and design) in May 2024 and have exhibited works at the Anna Leonowens Gallery and throughout HRM.
