Artist Spotlight: Karen R. Phinney

Artist: Karen R. Phinney

Karen has been painting and drawing for most of her life and has studied under various teachers in New Brunswick (N.B. Craft School) and Halifax. She has experimented with different media, and after years of doing watercolour decided to switch to acrylics. She enjoys painting many different subjects, including street scenes, still life, and landscapes. Karen’s works can be found in collections across Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Uruguay, and Switzerland. Read more about Karen here. 

What is your biggest indulgence as an artist? 

New brushes. 

What is important to you as an artist? 

Colour and pattern. 

What challenges you the most in your practice? 

Finding and executing a subject that appeals to me.

What themes or symbols are important to you as an artist?

I tend to go for domestic scenes and often incorporate chairs in my work which symbolize companionship, comfort and civilization. 

If you were to hang one work of art by another artist in your home, which would you choose?

A Van Gogh, as he has inspired me to seek and find my voice as an artist, as he did
