Collection: Goodman, Mary

Mary (Hodgins) Goodman grew up on a farm in northern New Brunswick.  After working in Montreal for several years, she moved to Halifax where she resides.

She has been making artwork since the early 70’s and has participated in group shows.  She has had three solo exhibitions since graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) from the Nova Scotia College of Art and design in 2010.

Artist Statement

My interest in painting is to create imagery which presents simplicity - filtered through memory – in an attempt to calm things down, at least visually, while trying to survive in a culture where overstimulation appears to be the name of the game.

Acrylic paint has become my primary medium due to its versatility and less hazardous qualities.  Each work involves a buildup of layers which modify the textural surfaces of the canvases or wood supports.  Although multiple layers share a passion for colour and texture, I usually allow former images and painting decisions to persist beneath the surface.
