Collection: Holbrook, Jane

Jane grew up in Nova Scotia and the Atlantic coast and maritime environment have been a constant inspiration to her. Always exploring a diverse range of interests, Jane initially studied biology (Dalhousie University, BSc 1980, MSc 1982) and then graphic design (NSCAD, Diploma Graphic Design, 1987).  Jane’s Nova Scotian background and training in biology, art and graphic design have all contributed to the way she sees the world and are integral to the images she creates. The endurance and power of the sea and shore, and the interaction of the natural world and people are recurring themes in her work. Jane enjoys the fluidity and spontaneity of painting, but also the many processes and experimentation that are possible with printmaking. Jane is currently a member of the Lunenburg Art Gallery Society and the Mahone Bay Printmakers.  She has shown her work in galleries in Nova Scotia and Ontario and has received formal recognition for her work through awards and participation in juried shows. She has been a part of The Ontario Miniature Print Exhibition since 2017.

Artist Statement

My two artistic passions are painting and printmaking. I enjoy painting through the summer in my shoreside studio in Stonehurst North, fully immersed in the changing light and the peace and quiet. The view is inspirational, no matter what the weather. Winter is the time for printmaking and card making. The technical and experimental aspects of printmaking keep me engaged through the long, cold months. My little studio in Halifax is my laboratory for trying new things, mixing colours and designing and carving linoleum blocks. Whether painting or printmaking, I am addicted to colour and use it to express light and atmosphere. My subjects are diverse; animals and plants, the sea and kayakers and historical coastal buildings all make an appearance in my images. The unifying characteristic, and something I strive for, is a sense of calm and, sometimes, whimsy.
