Collection: Kossmann, Stephanie

Stephanie Kossmann is a contemporary artist living in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. She grew up in a coastal town in Massachusetts and has also lived and worked in Ontario and Vermont. Her current work focuses on abstract oil painting and sculptural assemblage.

Her art explores themes of memory, perception, and emotion. She uses rich, vibrant colour to express sensations like temperature, scent, texture, and humidity--creating a strong sense of movement and energy.

Kossmann studied at Boston University, where she combined fine art with studies in landscape geography and environmental science. She also earned a graduate certificate in positive change leadership from Champlain College. She continues to grow her artistic skills through hands-on workshops.

Since 2016, Kossmann has had six solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group and juried shows across the U.S. and Canada. Her work has been featured in The Vermont Art Guide and The Remembered Arts Journal. She has been interviewed by WCAX-TV, Seven Days, and Times Argus.

Her current interests include the expressive use of portraiture skin tones in non-portrait abstract compositions and developing a painting process which reflects geological time and the transformation of landscapes.

Artist Statement

My work is defined by my expressive use of lush and often vibrant colour to generate a sense of movement and energy. Working the paint ultimately with my fingers and hands, my compositions pulse between chaos and calm. Open forms and translucent layers allow colour to resonate in both whispers and shouts, while gestural lines provide structure and focus. Intricate layers create an immersive visual experience while organic shapes offer emotional grounding and comfort.

Through all facets of my work, I invite viewers to pause, reflect, and connect--with themselves, with others, and with the world around them.
