Collection: Merkx-Jacques, Alexandra
Alexandra Merkx-Jacques, a Montreal native and self-taught painter with a Ph.D. in molecular microbiology, has explored the inner workings of nature both at the bench and the easel. Shaped by her multicultural background and time living in cities across Canada and abroad, her bold, colour-driven paintings have appeared in local Nova Scotian galleries. Under the name Green Monster Brushstrokes, she sells her art online and at community events. Originally a way to support her art habit, it is as a platform for challenging stereotypes of what women and scientists can achieve. Her motto: Scientist by day, Artist by night, Human the whole time.
Artist Statement
My medium of choice is acrylics. I do not shy away from bright and bold colours which are mostly likely influenced by my mixed cultural background and experiences living in and visiting several countries. My inspiration often comes from various walks near my home and during my travels.
I approach creating art the same way I do science; through experimentation of different painting styles, techniques, and/or textures— i.e., appreciating the feeling of discovery and invention. Through this journey, my artwork presents the everyday world through different lens and questions whether an artist truly needs to fit in a single box.
