Carolyn Poel was born in Denver, Colorado, but spent her early childhood years in Michigan, where she returned to attend Calvin College. From fourth grade until high school graduation, she attended the Christian Academy in Japan, where she took oil painting courses for the final four years. She majored in art at Calvin College, receiving a B.A. degree. After graduation, she moved to Iowa City for three years where she taught elementary school. When her husband accepted a position at Dalhousie University they immigrated to Canada. Carolyn has shown her work in numerous galleries, mostly in Halifax.
I paint primarily in response to the landscape. I try to reflect the sweep of openness of the land, as well as the intricate complexity of the scene. I do this by using high contrasts and great detail. My compositions endeavour to create something that reflects my vision for humans to be keepers of the earth, living in harmony with creation.
