Treen, Teresa

Teresa Treen is a visual artist and musician based in Wolfville, NS. In 2019, while completing the International Baccalaureate Diplomma Programme in Visual Arts, she discovered a love for painting. Also in 2019, she enrolled in an Undergraduate Degree at Saint Mary’s University, where she completed a Bachelor of Science. Teresa’s many interests are evident the style of her work: she has a range of still-life, landscape, portrait, and abstract paintings, along with many that are inspired by a love of music. Since 2020, Teresa’s practice has been entirely self-instructed. Her work can be found across Canada and the United States, as well as in North West England, New South Wales, and Western Australia.

Artist Statement

I am interested in creating paintings that depict a wide-range of subjects, and therefore many of my pieces have little-to-no relation to each other, thematically. Staying open to depicting dissimilar themes in my work is something that keeps me continuously excited to paint, and also offers a frequent challenge. For me, in terms of subject matter, everything is an option. My creative expression is conveyed largely through my use of highly saturated and occasionally unnatural colour palettes. Although many of my pieces are rooted in realism, I like to play with nonrealistic colours to bring a subtle sense of surreality to my work. Colour and vibrance are the main drivers in my paintings, and I use similar palettes in many of my pieces, introducing a sense of congruency into what are otherwise unrelated subjects.
