Musing about Muses
This sculpture series reimagines the ancient Greek muses through modern industrial materials—mild steel, forged and cold-worked—to bridge past and present ideas of inspiration. Depicting Clio, Euterpe, and Calliope, the work reflects the disciplines of history, music, and drama that contribute to my artistic practice and daily life. By merging bust and pedestal into a single form, I explore the historical paradox of women being idealized as symbols of virtue and inspiration while denied creative agency. The pieces carry a subtle irony: they both honour the enduring power of these figures and question the tradition of “placing women on a pedestal,” transforming that legacy into a contemporary, personal, and reflective statement.
